Georgia House Committee Releases Preliminary Findings on AI Regulation

State Lawmakers Propose New Rules for Artificial Intelligence

A state House committee tasked with examining the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) released its initial findings on Thursday.⁤ While the final report ‍is slated for release in January, committee members stressed ⁤their commitment ⁣to developing robust regulations for AI⁤ safety and responsible use. Key areas of focus include updating laws to combat disinformation and exploitation facilitated‍ by deep fakes, strengthening data privacy protections, and establishing a dedicated state board for AI oversight. The committee also aims to adapt an ethical code of conduct to guide the implementation of AI within⁣ state ⁣agencies.
“I just wont to thank everyone because as I was reading it, I was like, wow, this is something to be proud of,” said Rep. Todd Jones, who ⁢chairs the House’s Technology and infrastructure Innovation Committee. “This is real work product that I frankly⁤ think people⁣ expect us to do.”
For‍ these recommendations to become law, they must be formally incorporated into a bill and secure approval from both⁤ the House and Senate.
## AI Regulation: A New Frontier

**Archyde**: Thank you‌ for‌ joining us today, Representative Jones.

**Rep. Todd Jones**: It’s my pleasure to be hear.

**Archyde**: Your House committee has released some‍ preliminary findings ⁤regarding the ⁣regulation ‌of artificial intelligence. Can ‌you shed some light‍ on the most pressing concerns driving these recommendations?

**Rep. Todd Jones**: absolutely. The landscape of AI is evolving at an incredible pace. ‍While it‌ holds tremendous promise, we’re also seeing potential risks, especially in ⁢areas like the spread of ‌misinformation using deepfakes ‌and the ⁣protection‍ of our personal data. We need⁢ to ensure that AI development and ‍deployment prioritize responsible use and the well-being of our citizens.

**Archyde**: Your committee ⁢proposes the establishment ⁢of ⁢a⁣ dedicated state board for AI oversight. Can you ⁣elaborate on the board’s intended role and responsibilities?

**Rep. Todd Jones**: We envision this board as a ⁤multidisciplinary body ‍comprising experts from various fields, ‌including technology, law, ethics, ⁢and civil society. Its primary function would be to monitor the development and usage of AI, provide expert guidance to state agencies, and proactively address emerging challenges associated⁣ with AI ‌technology.

**Archyde**: ⁢ Another significant‌ proposal is the update of existing laws to‌ combat ‍disinformation facilitated‍ by⁣ deepfakes.

How will these legal updates address this complex issue?

**Rep. todd Jones**: ‍This is a critical area. We’re exploring legislation that would make it‍ illegal to create and distribute deepfakes with the intent to deceive or cause harm. We also want ‌to empower individuals who have been victims of deepfake attacks.⁣ Striking a balance between protecting free speech and curbing malicious misuse of this technology is crucial.

**Archyde**: What timeframe are we⁢ looking at for these recommendations to become actionable⁣ legislation?

**Rep. Todd Jones**: The full report with detailed policy proposals will‌ be released in January. ⁤following that, we’ll work ⁤with our colleagues ⁣in the House and Senate ‍to draft bills and⁤ introduce them for debate and voting. We hope to see significant progress on this front in the coming legislative session.

**Archyde**: Certainly, this is a pivotal moment in shaping the future of ‌AI.

What message would you like to send to our readers regarding ‌their role in this process?

**Rep. todd Jones**: This isn’t ⁤just ⁤about lawmakers‍ and⁣ technologists; it’s ‌about all of us. We need‌ public‍ engagement and thoughtful dialog‍ to ensure that AI ‌serves the best interests of society.

We encourage everyone⁤ to stay informed, voice their concerns, and participate in the conversation as we navigate ‍this new frontier.

## AI Regulation: A New Frontier

**Archyde**: Thank you for joining us today, representative Jones.

**Rep. Todd Jones**: It’s my pleasure to be here.

**Archyde**: Your House committee has released some preliminary findings regarding the regulation of artificial intelligence. Can you shed some light on the most pressing concerns driving the need for these new regulations?

**Rep. todd Jones**: Absolutely. As AI technology rapidly evolves, we’re seeing both immense potential and notable risks. Our committee has identified several key areas that require careful consideration and robust regulations. One major concern is the misuse of AI for spreading disinformation and manipulating public opinion through deep fakes. These sophisticated manipulations can erode trust in institutions and sow discord within society. We also need to strengthen data privacy protections to ensure that individuals have control over their personal information and are protected from exploitation. Furthermore, establishing a dedicated state board for AI oversight will help ensure responsible development and deployment of AI systems while addressing ethical considerations and potential biases.

**Archyde**: You mentioned the need to adapt an ethical code of conduct for AI implementation within state agencies. How would this code of conduct function in practice, and what are some of its key principles?

**Rep. Todd Jones**: ThatS right. We believe that transparency, accountability, and fairness should be at the forefront of any ethical framework for AI. This code of conduct would provide guidelines for state agencies on the responsible use of AI in decision-making processes. It would emphasize the need for human oversight, explainability of AI systems, and mitigation of potential biases that could lead to discriminatory outcomes. We want to ensure that AI is used in a way that benefits all members of society and doesn’t perpetuate existing inequalities.

**Archyde**: This seems like a complex undertaking. What are the next steps in moving these recommendations forward?

**Rep. Todd Jones**: The next crucial step is to formalize these recommendations into a comprehensive bill. Once drafted, the bill will require approval from both the House and Senate. We are committed to working collaboratively wiht stakeholders from across the political spectrum, industry experts, and the general public to ensure that the final legislation is thoughtful, balanced, and effectively addresses the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence.

**Archyde**: representative Jones, thank you for sharing your insights into this crucial issue. We appreciate your time.

**Rep. Todd Jones**: Thank you for having me.
