British Mercedes driver George Russell outperformed his compatriot and teammate Lewis Hamilton and took the first two positions in the first free practice of the Miami Grand Prix on Friday, while Dutch world champion Max Verstappen finished fourth.
Russell recorded the fastest lap time at the 5.41-kilometer Miami International Autodrome, with a time of 1 minute and 30.125 seconds, beating Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, by 0.212 seconds.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc came third, 0.324 seconds behind, while Verstappen came fourth.
The experience saw red flags fly with nearly 25 minutes remaining when Nico Hulkenberg, the Haas team driver, crashed into the barriers following losing control of the car at Turn 3. The German driver came out unscathed.
Verstappen leads the drivers’ standings by six points, ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez, following four grands prix and a short distance race. Perez finished 11th in today’s time trial.
