George Russell has admitted Mercedes F1 was ‘substantially worse than we expected’ at the Austrian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton and Russell took the checkered flag in 7th and 8th respectively, making them the fifth team at the Red Bull Ring behind Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin.
Since introducing the upgrade package at the Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes has scored two podiums and Hamilton has not finished outside the top four. Russell, on the other hand, finds it more difficult, although his pace on race day is similar to Hamilton’s. After the Austrian Grand Prix, Russell said he was confident Mercedes would “find out the truth” of its struggles. “I’m sure the truth will come out, but it’s the same car as when I flew in Barcelona two races ago, the only difference is the tires, so we need to understand that,” said Russell. “There have been some surprises, but I think Lando and McLaren have done a really great job.
