George Russell says the Mercedes F1 2022 machine W13 is “really difficult to drive” due to popping.
George Russell and his teammate Lewis Hamilton finished the previous Miami Grand Prix in 5th and 6th place, but were far behind the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari.
With multiple upgrades, the Mercedes F1 seemed much more competitive in Friday’s practice, but its form faded as the weekend progressed.
Nevertheless, George Russell is convinced that the W13 has performance.
“Well, the performance is there. We need to try to unlock it,” said George Russell.
“I don’t think we really understand why it’s so unpredictable.”
“Toto (Wolf) throws a lot of the word Diva, but it’s so unpredictable that I think it’s a bit understated. It’s really hard to drive when you start bouncing in a corner.”
George Russell admitted that he wondered why the team’s team had collapsed following making a strong start in Miami on Friday.
“We knew there was a fast racing car out there all the time. Friday was a complete outlier. We really don’t understand why.”
“Of course, Lewis did a better job than I did on Saturday and got 6th, but even with the fuel and power modifications, the one on Friday was his fastest lap. All the other drivers It was improving for over a second. “
“My race pace was 0.2 seconds slower than Friday’s Leclerc, Sunday went back from 0.5 seconds to 1 second, so I’m not sure.”
“I want to be honest. We’re hiring and understanding the best engineers in the business day and night, but we haven’t come up with a clear answer yet.”
“So we need to continue our analysis, and in retrospect, I think this weekend might be one of the most important weekends.”
George Russell admits that 5th and 6th are the best results for the Mercedes F1 at the moment, given the shape of the two top teams.
“I think 5th and 6th are the right places for us,” says George Russell.
“Obviously, performance may be bad on some other circuits, especially on Saturday, which makes Sunday difficult.”
“It’s certainly the most promising weekend, but it’s still a long way off.”
