The Genoa prosecutor’s office has requested an immediate trial for the former president of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, for the port entrepreneur Aldo Spinelli and for the former president of the Port Authority Paolo Emilio Signorini. The request has been forwarded to the judge for preliminary investigations who will now have to verify whether the conditions exist and then set the date of the trial: he will now have five days to decide on the immediate trial. The requirements for admitting the trial, which avoids the preliminary hearing, are that the suspects are under house arrest or imprisonment, have already been questioned and there is clear evidence related to the accusations made. The trial could begin between October and November. The three suspects then have 15 days, after the decree ordering the trial, to choose any alternative procedures such as an immediate trial or plea bargaining.
“I do not rate the request for immediate trial negatively. Now we will see, a new phase of intense work begins”, the reaction of the lawyer Stefano Savi, legal representative of the former governor of Liguria, who last week resigned from his position. The ruling on the precautionary measure of house arrest still in place for Toti, on which the revocation has been requested, is also expected within 5 days from Friday.
