Genk’s Disappointing UEFA Champions League Qualifying Campaign: Latest Updates and Analysis

2023-08-10 21:10:00

After his disappointment in the qualifying match for the Champions League once morest Servette Geneva, Genk was paid in the third qualifying round for the Europa League. This Thursday, at the Greeks of Olympiakos, the Limburgers fell once more.

After his surprise elimination once morest Servette, followed by his defeat once morest Eupen, is Genk already going through a low? The question arose before this first leg, away to Olympiakos.

The answer came following only…22 seconds. Rodinei moved far too easily to his right flank and crossed. Mc Kenzie was on the trajectory, but the American totally missed his clearance. Fortounis followed and shot Vandevoordt. 1-0, and here is already Genk in good trouble!

The Limburgers therefore had no other choice but to try to pick up the score as quickly as possible. But Vrancken’s men might not pack the meeting. It is even Masouras who will have the 2-0 at the end of the foot, but misses in front of Vandevoordt.

Passed near the correctional, Genk finally spared an opportunity, with Arokodare (45th + 6). Genk absolutely had to get his head above water in the second half.

But it is Olympiakos who will have control over the match. Masouras had a second chance to make it 2-0, stopped by Kayembe (54′). A few minutes later, Carvalho placed just beside the post.

Vrancken will then attempt a triple change, raising Sor, Ouattara and Arteaga. El Khannouss will try his luck, but it will be stopped by the Greek goalkeeper, Paschalakis (69th). Piel was close to making it 2-0, but hit the post (75th). Despite the rise of Bonsu Baah in place of Trésor – for one of his last matches with Genk? -, Racing will never be able to make the weight and pass close to equalization … until Arteaga misses the reception of a shot from El Khannouss (90th + 5). The score will therefore remain unchanged, following… 12 minutes of stoppage time: 1-0 for Olympiakos.

It is an understatement to say that a reaction is now expected in Genk. Next week for the return match, but also from this Sunday, at the Cercle de Bruges.
