Genk beat Antwerp 0-1 this Saturday evening. The Limburgers did the job once morest the Antwerp people in a rather balanced meeting in terms of possession but where the Genkois created the best chances. It was enough for men to Wouter Vrancken to convert just one using Anouar Ait El Hadj just before the break to secure the three points.
With this second victory in as many matches in these Champions’Play-offs, Genk (30 pts) comes back to five points behind Anderlecht and Union Saint-Gilloise (35 pts) who play this Sunday. Antwerp remains fifth (26 points).
Dominating in the first quarter of an hour, Genk offered itself multiple opportunities like a corner on which Mujaid Sadick recovered a lost ball but whose point-blank shot was blocked by an Antwerp defender (18th). After a solo exercise in the rectangle, Toluwalase Arokodare then armed a shot stopped by Senne Lammens (34e).
Just before the end of the first period, Ait El Hadj opened the scoring for the Limburgers. By cutting into the axis of the rectangle from the left wing, the former Anderlecht player sent a brushed shot which returned with the help of the bar and which was unstoppable for the Antwerp goalkeeper (44th, 0-1 ).
In the second half, Jacob Ondrejka was close to imitating his Limburg counterpart but fortunately for Genk, Maarten Vandevoordt was attentive and deflected the ball with a nice tap (52nd). The Limburg goalkeeper made another save at the end of the match on a cross narrowly deflected by Chidera Ejuke (90e+3). Zakaria El Ouahdi finally had the 0-2 ball at the end of his foot but failed to win his face-to-face with Lammens (90th + 4).
