For Genève Aéroport, the coming summer will resemble, in terms of activities, the summers before the Covid-19 pandemic. Travel demand is “very high” and just over 3 million passengers will pass through Geneva in July and August, the Geneva airport said on Monday.
According to forecasts, passenger traffic over the next two months will reach 92 to 93% of the 2019 level. In terms of number of flights, Genève Aéroport forecasts 94 to 96% of the summer 2019 volume. airlines and ground handling companies have mobilized to respond to this renewed activity.
confident director
“We will do everything we can to guarantee passengers a stable and peaceful air service during the summer of 2023”, notes the general manager of Genève Aéroport André Schneider, quoted in a press release. The boss of the Geneva airport also warns that external factors might destroy this great insurance. The weaknesses of certain airports, strikes, congestion in the air sky, the weather are elements over which Genève Aéroport has little or no control, he notes.
One hundred and twenty-three destinations are offered from Geneva. The connections are operated by 44 airlines. The airport offers twelve long-haul destinations with mostly daily frequencies, operated by Air China, Ethiopian Airlines and Delta.
For the past few weeks, notes Genève Aéroport, preparatory work has been carried out with the companies present on the site. This was to make sure there were enough staff and to ensure everyone was well coordinated in preparation for the summer rush.
Reinforced staff
Swiss and easyjet, the two companies offering the most destinations, say they are ready to face the summer rush. The “low cost” carrier, through the voice of its director for Switzerland Jean-Marc Thévenaz, announces the recruitment of 117 crew members in Geneva to support the arrival of new Airbuses.
On the Swiss side, the director of the company for French-speaking Switzerland Romain Vetter specifies that the company has planned its flight program in a conservative manner. A strategy that will allow him “to react to possible imponderables”. Swiss is also leading a recruitment campaign for cabin crew, including 60 dedicated to Geneva.
Ground handling companies also say they are ready to take up the challenge posed by the sharp increase in activity. Swissport has strengthened its workforce by hiring 110 employees since the beginning of the year. Dnata did the same by perpetuating the contracts of seasonal employees who had joined the company last winter. /ATS
