According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the statement was titled “Sustainable Peace in Sudan: Integrating Sudanese Women’s Viewpoints, Leadership, and Recommendations into Peace and Humanitarian Efforts in Sudan.”
“We recognize the pivotal role that women play in Sudan as peace activists, humanitarian workers, experts, and pillars of their communities,” the countries and parties that issued the statement said.
The participating States Parties added that “the integration of women is essential and indispensable for achieving and sustaining peace in Sudan. We must listen to the views and recommendations of Sudanese women and work to implement them if we want to achieve meaningful results. We commend here the aforementioned successful initiatives implemented with Sudanese women under the auspices of the African Union.”
“Thanks to our meetings with a diverse group of Sudanese women civilian experts in Switzerland, we are committed to advancing a common goal of addressing the plight of women and children in Sudan, as well as advancing their goals and meeting their needs across the various tracks of these talks. We are also committed to intensifying our diplomatic efforts to protect all civilians, especially women and children, from all forms of violence, including sexual violence during conflict,” the statement said.
“For this reason, yesterday, Thursday, the delegations established a specialized group that will give priority to incorporating the ideas and recommendations of women in Sudan. We will also continue our consultations with Sudanese women within the “Committed to Promoting Life-Saving and Peace in Sudan” platform to strengthen their voices, as we work towards a future of peace and prosperity in Sudan,” the statement concluded.
Sudan descended into chaos last year when tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces erupted into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum, before spreading across the country.
The Geneva talks come as more people face severe hunger and arduous displacement, and the number of civilian deaths is rising.
