Sarah bint Youssef Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, Chairwoman of the UAE Scholars Council, and Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates School Education Foundation, led the UAE delegation to the pioneering Geneva Foundation for Science and Diplomacy Summit 2023 (GESDA), which was held from October 11 to 13. .

She stressed the UAE government’s keenness to strengthen partnerships and constructive regional and international cooperation in the scientific and research fields, out of its belief in the ability of “scientific diplomacy” to formulate practical solutions to the challenges of sustainable development. Emphasizing the vital and important role of governments in enhancing the role of science and facilitating access to technology, which contributes to enhancing sustainability and achieving global prosperity.

She stressed the importance of education in accelerating new technologies, building capabilities, and promoting innovation, as well as the vital role of scientific achievements in facing the world’s most pressing future challenges. Discussions included harnessing cooperation and enhancing the impact of scientific discoveries, with a focus on the unlimited potential of emerging technology in supporting the process of sustainable growth. She explained: “To achieve scientific progress in various vital sectors, we must strengthen cooperation with international partners and reconsider governance frameworks by integrating inclusivity and sustainability into policies and regulations.”

The participants discussed the important role of scientific diplomacy in shaping the future of the world, with a focus on anticipating the challenges and opportunities provided by emerging technology, and the role of scientific achievements in achieving sustainable development goals. The delegation also discussed ways forward in the field of quantitative solutions.

The accompanying delegation also met with a number of officials to discuss various topics regarding the importance and role of scientific diplomacy in shaping the future of the world.

I participated in a session entitled “Quantum Solutions for All”, moderated by Ignazio Cassis, Federal Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, and Peter Brabeck-Litmathe, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the leading Geneva Foundation for Science and Diplomacy.

The UAE delegation included Imran Sharaf, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Science and Advanced Technology; Dr. Maha Barakat, Assistant Secretary of State for Health Affairs; Amal Al Hammadi, Director of the Science and Technology Policy Department; At the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Nouf Al Hameli, Science and Technology Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Minister also witnessed the launch of the “Open Quantum Institute” at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
