Geneva Athletes Achieve International Success: Honored by City and Canton Officials

The executives of the canton and the City of Geneva wanted to salute the sporting results which have recently made it possible to raise the colors of Geneva high on the international scene.

Since July, several local athletes have won an international medal or set records. Some have even become world champions in their discipline.

During a ceremony organized by the City of Geneva and the canton on Monday October 30, 2023, these athletes were congratulated and thanked for their exploits.

Roman Mityukovwho won a bronze medal in July at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, in the 200m backstroke, improving his national record at the same time;
The Geneva players of the women’s national tchoukball teamworld champions last August in Prague: Malika Egger, Lydia Favre, Marion Favre, Meghna Nagarajan, Marie Terrettaz, Samantha Urbina, as well as Alonso Ormeño, coach of the Swiss women’s team;
Celine van Tillcrowned cycling time trial world champion and silver medalist in the road race at the Worlds in Glasgow in August.
Sebastien Schneiderreturned the same month with the silver medal in 49er (light dinghy) at the Olympic Class World Championships in The Hague;
Martin Dougoudbronze medalist at the Kayak Worlds in London in the cross-country event.
Tadesse Abrahamwho wrote a new page in the history of Swiss athletics at the Berlin marathon, where he took 11th place and, in the process, broke the masters world record and improved his own Swiss record;
Elise Chabbeywho became world champion in the mixed cycling time trial relay in August (could not be present during the ceremony);
Sophie Lavaud1st Swiss and 3rd woman in the world to climb the fourteen highest peaks on the planet (unavailable today)

“All these athletes are examples for the younger generations and we are happy to help them achieve their goals through a policy of support for sports clubs and associations which benefits all practitioners, from juniors to elites,” said underlined Marie Barbey-Chpuis, administrative advisor of the City of Geneva in charge of the security and sports department.

State Councilor in charge of sports, Thierry Apothéloz recalled that these results come at the right time, less than 280 days before the Olympic and then Paralympic Games in Paris. “Most of these athletes are members of the cantonal support program Team Geneva and today we want to salute performances which prove the quality of elite sport in Geneva.” With the successes achieved during the summer, several Olympic tickets were also won.
