The strike by some Dnata employees begins Sunday morning at 4:00 a.m. at Geneva airport. Passengers should expect inconvenience, the airport warns on its website.
“Some of the employees of a service provider are on strike on Sunday, thus causing an impact on our operations,” wrote Geneva airport on Sunday morning on his website. He apologizes for the “inconvenience suffered”, without giving any further information at this time.
The number of passengers expected on Sunday should be lower than in recent days, airport spokesperson Ignace Jeannerat said on Saturday evening, without giving precise figures.
The SSP union announced on Saturday evening a strike by staff at the Dnata company, which provides part of the ground handling at Geneva airport, from Sunday morning at 4:00 a.m.
“The intimidation of Dnata management pushed the employees to the limit and convinced them to strike as soon as possible,” announced Jamshid Pouranpir of the public services union (SSP) on Saturday evening, cited by 20 minutes. The duration is indefinite: “It will be decided from hour to hour” as the strikers meet, he said.
Failed negotiations
The discussions between management and the SSP union before the Chamber of Collective Labor Relations (CRCT) therefore did not make it possible to reach an agreement. On Saturday, the “pressure” exerted by management – which threatened any strikers with immediate dismissal – had “produced the opposite effect. The employees’ rage will be expressed”, indicates the union.
The threat of a strike was raised at the start of the week by the SSP union. On Thursday, Dnata offered staff a salary increase of 1.7% before increasing to 3% on Friday, according to Jamshid Pouranpir. The union demands a 5% increase in salaries and the implementation of several bonuses linked to the arduousness of the work. For its part, the company believes that its “offer fully satisfies the demands that the SSP union made to the CRCT”.
According to an anonymous online survey conducted by the SSP, 93.8% of employees refused management’s proposal and 87.2% said they were ready to strike. Dnata employs around 600 people in Geneva.

Up to 60,000 passengers per day
The airport is preparing to welcome up to 60,000 passengers from Sunday, and Dnata’s operations concern around a quarter of the traffic at Cointrin. The group operates in particular on behalf of Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Iberia, Air Lingus and, in part, Easyjet.
The strike will therefore slow down transit through the airport. Travelers are invited to consult the airport website and contact their airline for further information.
