“Tolerance to beet yellows is destined to become an essential standard in the varietal offering, suspects Emmanuel Sterlin, marketing manager for Deleplanque. And all the more so even if yellows remained discreet in the fields in 2023 , it can very significantly impact the yield potential of beets. So limiting its impact at the start of the cycle is essential to maintain the crop’s yield potential in the early days following sowing.”
Tolerance to the three jaundice viruses
Beyond the solutions already envisaged within the framework of the PNRIgenetics is a much-awaited part of the solution.
Since it is impossible to know in advance which strain of the virus will be transmitted during the campaign, it is important that each variety is equipped with genetic material offering tolerance to the 3 viruses responsible for yellows. All while offering agronomic performances in line with the growers’ objectives.
To date, Deleplanque has in its catalog 7 varieties identified as tolerant to yellows; the seed company’s objective is that 90% of its varietal offering is tolerant to yellows by 2025.
280 souches of cercosporiose
The main problem of the campaign, Sigatoka is not left aside by seed companies. During Betteravenir 2023, Deleplanque presented the ST Olympe variety, whose tolerance to Sigatoka acts as a real safety net in the event of high disease pressure.
To be effective in all situations, multigenic tolerance ensures stronger protection to deal with the more than 280 strains of Sigatoka that threaten beet fields. The ST Olympe variety is also tolerant to yellows.
