The addition of an option allowing you to process PDF files and obtain their summaries in particular has delighted customers of the ChatGPT Plus version. But much less the developers who already offered it and certainly others who hope to make a living from an application grafted onto the application programming interface (API) made available by the OpenAI firm.
“A lot of startups have just died,” commented Alex Ker, founder of artificial intelligence incubator P-ai, following the PDF processing option was rolled out to ChatGPT Plus. “We are one of the ‘victims’ of this update,” added Alex Reibman. The result of the mini-survey from the entrepreneur behind the ChatOCR plugin confirms this. Three-quarters of those who participated think that its extension, which has similar characteristics to those integrated into ChatGPT Plus, will be used less.
Beyond this case, the message sent by Sam Altman’s firm to start-ups seems clear. OpenAI is not being asked to natively integrate and do very poorly with extensions already provided by developers active in its ecosystem.
