The tangle of factors that lead some people to suicidal ideation or attempted suicide is difficult to disentangle. But it seems that more and more young people are concerned.

The number of visits to the emergency room for suicidal actions by children aged 11 to 14, but also by adolescents aged 15 to 17, is higher in September than in previous years. In detail, during the month of September, these visits to the emergency room by young people aged 11 to 17 increased by 70% compared to the month of August (+587 visits).

Regarding suicidal ideas, visits to emergency rooms are up “markedly” in the month of September (+ 101%, or + 569 visits compared to the month of August).

Those over 25 also affected

If we take into account all mental health indicators, adult emergency department visits for different mental health indicators – ranging from acute alcoholic intoxication to eating disorders to anxiety disorders – are stable or decreasing compared to previous months.

The figures fluctuate in the values observed in previous years, “except for passages for suicidal thoughts which remain higher than those of previous years, mainly among people aged 25-64 and those over 65”, further indicates Public Health France .

Already at the beginning of the week, a study carried out by Ipsos for Axa Prévention on the state of mental health of the French – conducted using a recognized clinical test, the GHQ-12 – had set the tone. Mental health problems now affect a large proportion of the French population.

More than one in three people (36%) who participated in the study are in fact suspected of psychological suffering. Among those under 35, 54% are affected. The figure rises to 56% for those under 25. And, a point to emphasize, 60% of participants believe it is better not to reveal their state of mental health to avoid being ostracized.
