Generation Gap in Hybrid Workplaces: Gen Z and Y Face Rejection in Virtual Meetings

The gap between generations invites itself into hybrid workplaces. Gen Z and Y are two to three times more likely to be rejected than Gen X and Baby Boomers in virtual meetings, according to a survey.

On their own, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers were twice as likely to say they never felt left out of a conversation.

However, more than two in five people from Z and Y (41%) admitted that they feel “as engaged as they are in the office” when they turn on their cameras during meetings.

This is a necessary evil for them, according to the survey, since more than two out of three workers feel daily pressure to turn on their cameras during meetings.

The study was published in July 2023 while jobs in hybrid mode are still very popular, especially among young people. In fact, 6% of baby boomers come to the office five days a week, compared to 0% of Zs. others. This does not prevent them from feeling more excluded than the average baby boomer.

The survey was conducted among 1,845 participants by the Danish-American company Jabra, which specializes in audio products.
