General Motors will stop manufacturing an emblematic and problematic electric model

General Motors said it will end production of its Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle later this year as it shifts production from zero-emissions to trucks and SUVs built on a new battery platform.

“We have made so much progress that now is the time to plan for the end of production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the EU, which will happen by the end of the year,” GM Chief Executive Mary Barra told investors on Tuesday.

The Chevy Bolt EV is one of the big lemons that General Motors sells, and it has had countless recalls, some of them stopping production.

The automaker sold 38,120 Bolt EVs in 2022, up from 24,828 in 2011, and 19,700 in the first three months of the year. The Bolt, GM’s first mass-market electric vehicle, still accounts for more than 90% of all GM EV sales in the US.

The Bolt was preceded by the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid whose GM production ended in 2019.

In the late 1990s, GM built and leased regarding 1,100 EV1 cars, a model that ended in scandal, with a story that hit big screens as “Who Kill the EV1.”

The Bolt, which starts at $26,500 and qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit, has been repeatedly touted by the Biden administration as an example of an affordable electric vehicle.

David Zipper, a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School who writes regarding transportation policy on Twitter, criticized GM’s decision, calling it “a step backwards for highway safety, emissions mitigation and vehicle affordability.” electrical.

Put electric vehicles out of reach for all but the rich.” Americans widen inequalities and slow electrification,” Zipper said.

After the announcement, GM shares fell 4.2%

In January 2022, GM said it would invest $4 billion at its Orion Township Assembly Plant building the Bolt, to produce the Chevrolet Silverado EV and electric GMC Sierra, using its next-generation Ultium EV platform.

In August 2021, GM announced a $2 billion recall campaign, which it expanded to cover all 140,000 Bolt vehicles it had produced for battery fire hazards.

The recall prompted GM to halt Bolt production and sales for more than six months.

Our recommendation is that until the General Motors electric models are on the street and in circulation without recalls, then you can take a look at it, otherwise we DO NOT recommend buying any General Motors electric vehicles, since those that are in production , such as the Hummer or the Cadillac Lyriq, have not been able to be delivered to those who have ordered it due to manufacturing problems, which are mostly electrical problems.
