• More than 2 billion CFA francs were mobilized in the operation

• 550 data collection agents in 13 regions

• Provide decision makers with reliable and up-to-date data

Aïssata Kanazoé of the Burkina Faso Chamber of Commerce and Industry praised the emphasis on the private sector

“The private sector, and especially companies, are the engine of our economy. To be able to plan development, we must take these companies into account, understand how they function, how they develop, in what context they carry out their activities and what their contribution to the national economy is. For this, it is very important to have reliable data, up-to-date data, fairly complete data.” These words of Boureima Ouédraogo, Director-General of the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD), summarize the need for Burkina Faso to have a profile on the companies operating in the territory.

Since August 8, an exercise called the General Business Census 2024 has been launched throughout the territory and will last until the end of December 2025. The work is carried out in three phases, including preparatory work and data collection; data processing and analysis; and publication of results. Companies will be identified and counted from August 20 to December 22, 2024. Data collected from January to May 2025 will be processed. Reports will be written from May 2025 to December 2025. Over a period of four months, 550 agents will travel through 13 countries and regions. The Burkina Faso region collects data. Their work in this RGE will include the collection of reliable and up-to-date information on all economic units operating in the formal and informal sectors and residing on the national territory. They were provided with 700 tablets, 450 mobile power supplies and 450 portable solar panels. The census will cover all economic units established on the national territory and carrying out activities in fixed premises or developed sites. These include, among others, informal enterprises operating in fixed premises; formal private companies, State public institutions (EPEs) carrying out commercial activities; State-owned enterprises; Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and associations. On the other hand, markets and markets are not concerned; decentralized central economic administrations; diplomatic and consular missions; non-modern agricultural units, non-market EPEs and mobile economic units. The census will cost 2,294,880,200 CFA francs and is financed by the World Bank and the Government of Burkina Faso.

“This project is a cornerstone of Burkina Faso’s commitment to the structural transformation of its economy. In the process of modernizing the national economy, the Government reaffirms the role of the private sector as a driver of economic development and therefore considers the provision of reliable and up-to-date business statistics to be a necessary and decisive step. The official launch of the operation on August 8 in Ouagadougou was presided over by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy, Abdou Rachid Soulama, on behalf of the Minister. The business community hopes that this initiative will be a success, as it also involves increasing investments and business. “High-quality statistics are also useful for entrepreneurs and investors to understand economic dynamics, in order to better make investment decisions and development strategies for their businesses,” acknowledged Aïssata Kanazoé, Vice-President for Services of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Burkina Faso.

The Sub-Saharan African Economic and Statistical Observatory (AFRISTAT) recommends updating the sampling frame for business surveys every 5 years. As a result, the most recent and comprehensive information on business demographics has become less reliable since 2016. With the RGE 2024, Burkina Faso is updating its own plans.
