Unsurprisingly, generative AI topped the 2023 edition of Gartner’s Emerging Technologies Hype Cycle. The metaverse is gone and some cloud-native technologies are trending.
Gartner’s Emerging Technologies Hype Cycle has a completely different face than last year. While the 2022 edition gave pride of place to the metaverse and the concepts associated with immersive worlds, the 2023 edition places generative AI in its firmament. NFT, Web3 and decentralized identity are absent subscribers. As well as the metaverse, which one would have well imagined categorized as “obsolete before the plateau”, that is to say before starting to be significantly adopted by the general public.
As a reminder, these Gartner predictions aim to list the most fashionable technologies by categorizing them according to a cycle that goes from buzz to disillusion, before moving on to the stage of maturity and imposing itself on the market.
GenAI and Emerging AI
According to the firm’s analyses, the GenAI, on everyone’s lips, is expected to have a revolutionary impact within two to five years, when expectations are the highest. “The massive pre-training and scale of AI foundation models, the viral adoption of chatbots, and the proliferation of generative AI applications herald a new wave of workforce productivity and machine creativity,” says Arun Chandrasekaran, Distinguished Analyst at Gartner.
Other AI technologies are also to be followed closely. Of which federated machine learning et graphic data science, both of which will become established within the next five to ten years. Even more experimental today, neuro-symbolic AI might see its adaptation take off in more than ten years.
IT security and development
AI also lurks in other emerging technology fields considered by Garner. Like the set of tools grouped under the banner “Developer Experience (DevX)”, a term used to describe all facets of interactions between developers and the tools, platforms, workflows, and collaborators they work with. The success of most organizations’ digital initiatives depends on improving the developer experience, notes Gartner.
The rise of GenAI also brings new needs, particularly in terms of security. Thus, Gartner estimates that within 2 to 5 years the approach «AI TriSM», which refers to an enterprise-wide strategy for managing AI trust, risk, and security. This approach might be key in the future alongside other human-centric security and privacy technology areas. Of which the homomorphic encryption and the post-quantum cryptography.
Innovations cloud
Finally, note that in the eyes of Gartner analysts, the cloud continues to be the subject of innovations worthy of inclusion in this 2023 selection of emerging technologies. Like cloud-native tools, including “Enhanced FinOps”, but also industrial cloud platforms (tailored for specific business sectors). Without forgetting the web development standard WebAssembly (Wasm) to replace JavaScript.
