Gen3: innovation, sustainability and more excitement in Formula E

  • The debut of the Gen3 this season brought technical, design and sustainability improvements, breathing new life into Formula E racing
  • Nissan, in turn, presented a redesign of its single-seater NISSAN e-4ORCE for the new era of Gen3

South AmericaThe big news for the 2022/23 Season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship comes from the hands of Gen3, the third generation of Formula One cars E. Faster, lighter and more sustainable, this is how the new single-seater was born, developed by the engineers of the International Automobile Federation and Formula E. With an optimized chassis, the Gen3 is the first racing car designed specifically for street circuits.

What are the main changes?

  • Lighter: It weighs 60 pounds less than the Gen2, in part due to the removal of the rear brakes and a smaller battery. The Gen3 retains hydraulic brakes at the front, but will rely heavily on regenerating the front and rear engines to slow the car down.
  • More potent: this new generation gives the single-seaters 40% more power and a top speed of over 320 km/h. This is possible because it produces 600 kW of total power between the 350 kW drive motor at the rear axle and the standard 250 kW motor at the front.
  • Faster: 14% faster than the GEN2, with a top speed of over 320 km/h (200 mph), thanks to engine and battery improvements.
  • More sustainable: the Gen3 incorporated biomaterials and sustainable rubber into its all-weather tires. Batteries will be recycled at the end of their useful life.

When comparing the Gen3 with previous generations of Formula E single-seaters, progress is seen in terms of power, top speed and maximum regeneration, three key variables for competition:

New design with Japanese DNA

In addition to innovations in terms of technology, Nissan introduced a new design for its cars. The NISSAN e-4ORCE 04, Nissan’s new Gen3, accompanies these innovations with a striking decoration of cherry blossoms, the national flower of Japan. Known as Sakura, this flower represents a new era for Nissan Formula E, which for the first time competes as a single team under a new name.

The Gen3 era runs from Season 9 (2022/23) to the end of Season 12 (2025/26).
