A baby with a body weight far above normal was born at the Cililin Regional General Hospital (RSUD), West Bandung Regency. The baby of a married couple, Ai Habibaturohmah, 31, and Hasanudin, 39, residents of Malandong Village, Pasirpogor Village, Sindangkerta District, weighs 5.2 kilograms and is 53 centimeters long.

The baby was born on Wednesday, May 8 2024 at 09.40 WIB via cesarean section. The birth of this baby shocked and surprised the family because its weight was almost double the average size of a newborn baby in general.

“I was shocked and happy because it weighed so much, more than 5 kilograms,” said Solehah, the baby’s grandmother who was met at the Cililin Regional Hospital.

He was also proud of the presence of this male child because he had been eagerly awaited, considering that the three previous children of Ai and Hasanudin were girls.

Before being taken to Cililin Regional Hospital, he explained, Ai checked her pregnancy with a midwife near her house. Because she had entered pregnancy and the potential for a large baby was detected, the department then referred her to Cililin Regional Hospital.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) she was taken to the midwife and then referred to the hospital because she had a big baby in her womb,” he said.

Solehah said that three other grandchildren also had a history of babies weighing more than 3 kilograms. However, he did not expect that Ai’s fourth child would weigh 5.2 kilograms.

“Thank God my child and grandchild were safe during the birthing process. The mother is recovering and the baby is still being observed,” he said.

Head of Health Services at Cililin Regional Hospital, Evi Apriana, explained that the baby’s condition following birth was declared healthy, but he experienced a little shortness of breath so he needed a breathing aid.

“The baby was still being observed for 6 hours, we saw an increase in his respiratory rate. For a normal baby it was 60 times per minute, while for this baby it was 70 times per minute,” he said.

Furthermore, following observation, the team of doctors will check the baby’s blood sugar levels to find out the cause of the baby’s weight being above average.

According to him, cases of large babies are usually triggered by the parents’ diet or congenital diabetes mellitus (DM).

“We will check the blood sugar levels to find out whether the baby has diabetes or not. If the results are good and his health improves, he will be allowed to go home,” he explained.
