The Mayor of Santander, Gema Igual, chaired this Thursday, July 25, the traditional lunch of mayors of Cantabria on the occasion of the celebration of Semana Grande and coinciding with the feast of Santiago Apóstol, which took place at the Gran Casino del Sardinero.

“Let us take advantage of this important day to strengthen ties, share dreams and continue moving towards a future full of opportunities and well-being for each municipality in Cantabria,” Igual stressed during his welcome speech to the more than fifty councillors attending the event.

The mayor has highlighted the importance that this day of coexistence has acquired and has called for the union of those who proudly represent the residents of Cantabria.

He thanked the mayors of different political backgrounds for their attendance and pointed out that, beyond the acronyms, “Santander today celebrates diversity, unity and joint work for a promising future for all Cantabrians,” he said.

“Mayors have to be together because we have the same challenges, the same difficulties, the same exciting work,” Igual stressed, and hoped that those present would feel “at home” and return to their municipalities with the certainty that Santander “appreciates and values each of the 101 municipalities of Cantabria.”

In addition, he invited the mayors to tell their neighbours that Santander “is celebrating and, as a good host, is waiting for them with open arms to enjoy some unique days”.

The mayor has also focused on municipalism as “the essence of the closeness and empathy that we owe to our localities and to all the people who inhabit every corner of our cities and towns.”

“Today, in this celebration of the feast of Santiago, let us reaffirm our commitment to learn from each other, to help and support each other. No matter how big or small our municipalities are, each one has an essential role in the development of Cantabria,” he added.

“All very special for this mayor and for this Municipal Corporation of Santander. Long live Santiago!, Long live Santander!, Long live Cantabria and its 102 municipalities!”, concluded Igual.

Finally, he highlighted the “good atmosphere” that the different activities organised for Semana Grande are creating.
