Geekbench considers removing Xiaomi’s flagship phone ‘performance manipulation’ after the Galaxy S22

Following Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S22 series, which has been embroiled in controversy over its game optimization service (GOS), the possibility that Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone will be removed from the ‘Geekbench’ has been raised. It is suspected that the operating environment was manipulated to show improved performance in games or apps recognized as performance measurement (benchmark).

According to foreign media on the 29th, Geekbench, a website specializing in overseas electronic device benchmarks, is conducting an investigation into the benchmark scores of the Xiaomi 12 series. Noticeable performance differences have been found between some app versions, and we will decide to exclude the Xiaomi 12 series from the benchmark chart this week.

Geekbench CEO John Poole posted on his Twitter account that when the Geekbench app identifier was changed to a ‘Fortnite’ game, the single-core score decreased by 30% and the multi-core score decreased by 15%.

“It is disappointing that smartphone manufacturers mislead consumers by reducing application performance rather than benchmark performance,” he said.

Android Police, a foreign media outlet, also reported that on Xiaomi 12 Pro equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 1st generation (Gen1), apps recognized as Geekbench or ‘Genshin’ showed single-core scores that improved up to 50% compared to Netflix or Chrome apps. .

Earlier, Geekbench excluded Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy Tab S8 series from the benchmark chart. The reason is that the reliability of performance measurement has been damaged as the controversy over intentional performance degradation with GOS arose. Since then, Samsung Electronics has updated the software (SW) so that users can select GOS functions.
