Gdańsk. 44th anniversary of the August Agreements. Danuta Wałęsa: I have a dream

On Saturday, Gdańsk will host ceremonies commemorating the 44th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements. Their participants symbolically opened the historic Gate No. 2 of the Gdańsk Shipyard.

– I hope that next year – during the 45th anniversary – there will be many more of us here. I would dream so much that “the other side”, which went further, would also be with us – said Danuta Wałęsa, a democratic opposition activist and wife of former Polish President Lech Wałęsa during the ceremony.

At that moment, loud applause was heard in front of the Gdańsk Shipyard building.

44th Anniversary of the August Agreements. Powerful speech by Danuta Wałęsa

– I have this reflection after all this, after the election of the new government, that we have justice, as it were, and we will continue to fight for this right – she added, and then addressed politicians from the ruling camp.

– I encourage you not to rest on your laurels, but to fight together for a better tomorrow for all of us. For children and grandchildren – emphasized Wałęsa.

August 1980. August Agreements. What were they?

Let us recall: On August 31, 1980, the August Accords were signed in Gdańsk, i.e. four agreements concluded by the then Polish People’s Republic government with the strike committees established in the same year. The agreements ended the events of August 1980, i.e. a wave of strikes and workers’ protests against the communist government.

The agreements were signed by the strike committee and the then communist government commission. They assumed, among other things, the possibility of establishing independent trade unions, which opened a new chapter in the history of Poland and Central Europe. Both the document and the creation of Solidarity were the basis for the later democratic changes in 1989.
