PALESTINIANS warn of possible famine in the northern Gaza Strip as Israel’s ongoing blockade forces five of the six bakeries operating in the territory to close.
“Five out of six bakeries in northern Gaza are closed due to the Israeli blockade on the entry of fuel and raw materials needed to make bread,” Kamel Ajjour, a bakery owner, told Anadolu Agency on Sunday (September 15).
“Our bakery is the only one still operating in this area and it will likely close within a week if Israel continues to block the entry of fuel and essential supplies,” he warned.
Ajjour stressed that fuel has not been delivered to bakeries in northern Gaza for more than 10 days. “The supply of essential ingredients such as flour, sugar and yeast has been significantly reduced for almost a month,” he said.
He warned of the possibility of a severe bread crisis if his bakery also stops operating in northern Gaza.
Ajjour called on international organizations, including the UN, to immediately intervene to prevent famine in northern Gaza and to expedite the delivery of fuel and essential materials to support bread production in the enclave.

Israel has been relentlessly launching its brutal attacks on Gaza since the Hamas resistance group crossed the border last October, despite UN Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire.
More than 41,200 people, mostly women and children, have since been killed and more than 95,300 injured, according to local health authorities.
The Israeli offensive has displaced nearly the entire population of the territory, amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine. Israel faces charges of genocide from the International Court of Justice over its actions in Gaza. (Ant/Z-2)

Gaza is on the brink of a severe famine crisis as Israel’s ongoing blockade has forced five out of six bakeries in the northern region to shut down. The remaining bakery is struggling to operate, warning that it will likely close within a week if the blockade persists.
Kamel Ajjour, a bakery owner, described the dire situation to Anadolu Agency, stating that fuel has not been delivered to bakeries in northern Gaza for over 10 days. “The supply of essential ingredients such as flour, sugar, and yeast has been significantly reduced for almost a month,” he added.
The lack of fuel and raw materials has crippled bread production in Gaza, leaving many without access to this essential staple. Ajjour warned of the possibility of a severe bread crisis if his bakery also stops operating, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
The Israeli blockade has been in place since 2007, severely restricting the entry of goods and materials into Gaza. This has led to widespread poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity in the region. The blockade has been described as a “man-made” weapon, perpetuating suffering and instability in Gaza.
