Gaza: First UN foreign worker Indian dies

An Indian man died in Gaza following October 7, 2023 United Nations An activist working for the US was killed when a vehicle he was traveling in was attacked in Rafah.

Vaibhav Anil Kail, a 46-year-old Indian national who started working as a security service coordinator in Gaza last month, died on Monday. Another UN official was injured in the attack.

Although the UN statement did not confirm his identity, the Press Trust of India reported that he was an Indian national and a former Indian Army officer.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said that the Secretary-General is aware of the death of a staff member of the United Nations Security and Security Service (DSS) and the injury of another DSS employee. Very sad to hear the news when he was on his way to a European hospital in Rafah this morning.’

The statement added that the ongoing conflict in Gaza is having a severe impact not only on civilians but also on humanitarian aid workers. The Secretary-General reiterates his urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all prisoners.

The UN officials died when they were traveling in a vehicle from Rafah to the European Hospital in the southwest corner of Khan Yunis.

The Washington Post reported that the incident is currently being investigated. Citing sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, the newspaper said there was no definitive information available at this time on who attacked the vehicle.

Haq said that the United NationsIsrael has been informed regarding the movement of all our caravans. All the vehicles of the caravans are clearly marked with United Nations.

Meanwhile, an Israel Defense Forces spokesman said the IDF had not been informed of the vehicle’s route. He said that ‘the incident is being reviewed.’

According to the spokeswoman of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Olga Chiriono, 191 UN workers have lost their lives in Gaza since October 7 last year, most of them Palestinians. These include the recent death of a worker which was reported on Monday.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that between October 7, 2023 and May 12, 2024, more than 35,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza, while 78,000 more have been injured.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in his response to the news of the death of a UN official on Monday: ‘Today we are saddened by the death of one UN aid worker and another in Gaza. Shocked to learn regarding the injuries.

“Many civilians and human lives have paid the price of this war.

‘Cease fire and work for peace.’

According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), regarding 360,000 people have left Rafah since the initial evacuation order was issued a week ago. Many of these people have been displaced several times in the past seven months.

Meanwhile, an evacuation was ordered from northern Gaza last week amid sustained Israeli bombardment that has displaced nearly one hundred thousand people so far.
