The president of Columbia University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, announced during a hearing in the American Congress that she had fired a professor who had sided with Hamas in the followingmath of the massacre of Israelis on 7 October. The announcement was made in response to the Republican Elise Stefanik, who had reminded the president, Nemat Shafik, of the case of the teacher Mohamed Abdou: the professor had posted messages in support of Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad.
“I share his repugnance towards those phrases – explained Shafik – I understand it in the most complete way, but under my presidency there are consequences when the limits are exceeded in terms of anti-Semitism”. Referring to the teacher, Shafik recalled the hard punch: «he was sent away». The president also declared that Abdou “will never teach at Columbia once more and this will remain on her resume permanently.” The hearing was organized to examine cases of anti-Semitism and intolerance towards Arab students affecting the elite university and follows the hearing, which took place late last year, which was examined by the Chamber of Deputies. leaders of three other top-level universities: Harvard, MIT and University of Pennsylvania. That hearing four months ago had proved disastrous for the three women at the top, to the point that shortly followingwards the president of Harvard, Claudine Gay, and that of the University of Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Magill, were forced to resign. The war in Gaza also causes victims in the USA.
