Gaza: American ship with humanitarian aid left Cyprus
 – 2024-08-04 19:18:58

A cargo ship filled with humanitarian aid left today (09.05.2024) from Larnaca, Cyprus, bound for Gaza.

In a new test of the sea corridor created to transport aid to Palestine, which has been devastated by the war between Israel and Hamas, a US ship left Cyprus for Gaza. The cargo ship is heading to the Palestinian enclave from the port of Larnaca filled with humanitarian aid. Deputy government spokesman Giannis Antoniou said about the US-flagged MV Sagamore:

“Loaded with humanitarian aid, it left the port of Larnaca before noon for Gaza.” And he continued speaking to the Cyprus News Agency: “The ship is carrying a significant cargo of humanitarian aid from the United States, Britain and Cyprus.”

The humanitarian aid is expected to be transported to a temporary jetty built by the US off the coast of Gaza before being transported to Palestinian territory.

Governments and international organizations are scrambling to find alternative ways to deliver aid to Gaza after the UN warned of imminent famine amid a sharp drop in international ground aid deliveries, tightly controlled by Israel, which has been under siege from the Gaza Strip since October 9. 2023.

The Spanish NGO Open Arms, in collaboration with the American NGO World Central Kitchen, chartered in March the first humanitarian aid ship that traveled from Cyprus to Gaza.

However, the international community and NGOs emphasize that this sea route, as well as airdrops of aid from planes from many countries to Gaza, cannot replace humanitarian aid by land.
