New York: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that Gaza has become a graveyard for children. “Hundreds of children are killed and many injured every day. “Gaza, which has already killed more than 4,100 children, has become a graveyard for children,” he told the media at the UN headquarters in New York City.
“More journalists have been killed in Gaza in four weeks than in any other conflict in the world in three decades. More staff have been killed in Gaza than at any other time in the history of our organization (UN). Every hour that passes emphasizes the need for an immediate ceasefire,” Guterres said.
“Israel is targeting hospitals, refugee camps, mosques, churches and UN facilities, including shelters. No one is safe there. It is a clear violation of international law. Newborn babies in incubators and patients on life support will die because there is no fuel in the hospitals. This is a crisis of humanity,” Guterres said.
He said that the humanitarian aid currently being received in Gaza is negligible. The number of trucks passing through the Rafah border is insufficient to meet Gaza’s immediate needs. Guterres announced that the U.N. has launched an effort to raise $1.2 billion to help 2.7 million Palestinians.
“We are witnessing a gross violation of international humanitarian law. All parties must comply with international humanitarian law. No one is above the law. A ceasefire should be implemented immediately. The hostages in Gaza must be released immediately. “Hamas must stop using civilians as human shields and firing rockets at Israel,” Guterres said.
Earlier in the UN Security Council meeting, he commented that the attack carried out by Hamas on October 7 did not happen out of thin air.
