Gavdos: Final titles for the “survivors”? The new notices for the demolition of stilts and tree houses 2024-07-15 03:47:39

As it became known a few days ago, the relevant notices have been sent by the Forestry Policy Implementation Inspection of Crete in order to demolish and remove the improvised huts characterized as “arbitrary shacks”.

These are the “tree houses” of the “Survivors” who decided to leave life in an urban environment and live in the natural environment. However, the mayor of Gavdos, believing that the absence of the Survivors will contribute to the development of the island, has made great efforts to remove them.

This action has caused significant reactions, both from the local community and from visitors. Last year, nudists were removed from beaches, and arrests were made for public indecency. These actions cause a sensation as Gavdos was known for the freedom and tolerance it offered to its visitors.

“They degrade the environment”

In 2022, there was another attempt to remove the “survivors” at the initiative of the mayor of Gavdos, Lilian Stefanaki. At the time he argued that “these makeshift constructions, which have been erected on the beaches of the island, on the one hand degrade the environment and on the other hand pose a great risk of fire”.

As he said “these constructions of the “survivors” and their residence on the beaches for me are parasitic behaviors and should not be accepted. Just as it is not possible for someone to set up a tent in Knossos and remain there, so it is not possible for him to be able to do it in Gavdos, because the island is far away.”

At the same time, Mrs. Stefanaki had made a call to those who want to stay permanently on the island: “Anyone who wants to come to Gavdos to work, create, build their life is welcome. What is not acceptable is this behavior. To appropriate, that is, the natural resources of the place, the forests and the archaeological sites for your own benefit, to be a pest in these places and to have delinquent behavior”.

Exciting stories

The story of Maros is typical of the Survivors community. Maro, facing him cancer, had chosen to live peacefully on the island. Her friends built a tree house on the beach, offering her support and care. In the winters she underwent chemotherapy and in the summers she lived in Gavdos, with the help of the community that provided her with food and water. Despite fighting cancer for 13 years, Maro finally passed away this year, leaving behind an empty tree house and a touching story that was etched in the hearts of her friends.
