Coco Gauff’s winning record in China continues after the American (US) tennis player won 6-4 and 6-1 over Marta Kostyuk in the last 16 of the Wuhan Open, Thursday (10/10).

“I’m very happy with my game today,” Gauff said after her win, as broadcast by the WTA.

“It was quite an easy match. Marta and I always fight well. Today I was able to win in two straight sets,” he continued.

Gauff, seeded fourth, beat 13th seed Kostyuk in just 61 minutes to claim her eighth straight win on tour.

Gauff captured her eighth career WTA singles title last week at the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing, returning to fourth in the world on Monday (7/10).

She still has a chance to become the second player to win tennis tournaments in Beijing and Wuhan in the same year since the WTA 1000 tournament started rolling in 2014. Caroline Garcia won both titles in 2017.

The victory was also Gauff’s 70th career win at the WTA 1000 event. The 20-year-old American became the youngest tennis player to reach that figure since the WTA 1000 level began in 2009.

Gauff is the fourth tennis player to reach the milestone before turning 23, joining Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka and Iga Swiatek.

Gauff’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be world number 45 Magda Linette of Poland.

Linette knocked out eighth seed Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-3 in 72 minutes, earning her 14th career Top 20 win and reaching her first career WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

Gauff battled past Linette in their only previous meeting, with the American winning 5-7, 6-3 and 6-4 in the first round of the 2021 US Open.

“That match, it was a long time ago,” Gauff said.

“I trained with her (Linette) a few times in between. She lives in south Florida. She’s a tough opponent. She’s been playing
some great games in Wuhan. “I predict this will be a tough match,” he added. (Ant/Z-1)
