A Century of Song: Celebrating 100 Years of Gaston Macors’ Musical Journey
From the grand organ to the harmonies of the choral stage, Gaston Macors’ life has been an enduring symphony of musical devotion. At the remarkable age of 100, Macors continues to share his passion for music, reminding us that a life filled with melody can truly be a lifelong gift.
Macors’ affinity for music blossomed early, evolving into a deep commitment to the organ. By the age of 22, he had taken his place as organist at the Saint Marguerite parish. Driven by an insatiable desire to refine his craft, he returned to the Liège Conservatory, where he honed his skills on the magnificent organ of the Philharmonic Hall under the tutelage of the esteemed French concert pianist and professor, Jeanne Demessieux.
This dedication to music extended far beyond the organ. Macors’ love for all forms of music led him to join “Les Disciples de Grétry,” a men’s choir, in 2003. Today, he remains an active member, proudly singing in the first row of the second tenors. His commitment to the choir is a testament to his enduring passion and unwavering energy.
“Gaston Macors continued to accompany the services in most of the churches in Liège and in particular during the funerals of Julie and Mélissa at the Basilica of Saint Martin,” those close to him shared. “But a tireless lover of music in all its forms, in 2003 he joined the men’s choir “Les Disciples de Grétry”, where even today at the age of 100, he proudly sings in the first row of second tenors.”
His vitality and joy are infectious, captivating audiences and fellow musicians alike.
“A whole life dedicated to music really seems to keep you in shape!” remarked one observer. “Gaston Macors still has this reputation as a fun performer and was able to prove it this weekend in front of the members of the Royal singing society “Les Disciples de Grétry”. Founded in Liège by the choir of the Men’s Choir, this Society received the title of “Royal”, with the apotheosis of a concert at the royal conservatory of Liège in the presence of the royal couple HRH King Albert I and HRH Queen Elisabeth.”
Today, “Les Disciples de Grétry” thrives under the direction of Damien Girs, a renowned choir director and accompanying pianist for various choirs, including the Royal Opera of Wallonia. This prestigious ensemble brings together approximately thirty voices, all united by a shared love for choral music.
Macors’ life is a testament to the transformative power of music. His dedication to his craft, spanning over eight decades, illustrates the enduring joy and fulfillment that music can bring throughout a lifetime. His enthusiasm and spirit continue to inspire those around him, proving that a century dedicated to music is a life truly well-lived.
