Our national Gaspar Noé toured twice with Anthony Vaccarello. He tells…
Last April, Maison Saint Laurent declared on Instagram : « With the debut of Saint Laurent Productions, a registered subsidiary of the house imagined by Anthony Vaccarello, Saint Laurent is proud to become the first luxury brand to count full-fledged film productions among its activities. “. And announced in the process to produce giants like Pedro Almodóvar, Paolo Sorrentino, David Cronenberg, Wong Kar-wai, Jim Jarmusch, Gaspar Noé… “ You can still watch a movie 10 or 30 years later, if it’s good, then confided Vaccarello. In some ways, making a movie can be more impactful than a seasonal collection. For me, it’s a natural extension into another area of creativity that is perhaps more general and popular. »
To find out a little more regarding the marriage between fashion and cinema, but also the methods of Vaccarello, an elegant and demanding producer, we contacted Gaspar Noé, who has already worked twice with Saint Laurent.
How did you meet Anthony Vaccarello?
Gaspar Noah: I met him in Miami, when I participated in a Gagosian exhibition on desire with a series of my photos. We had drinks, we talked, he told me I had to be on Instagram. In Paris, he contacted me a week later, in February-March, to tell me regarding a project. Saint Laurent was already helping photographers and performers like Vanessa Beecroft and they had already financed a short film with Bret Easton Ellis. He wants to know if I would like to be financed? I ask for the conditions and Anthony just tells me that he would like us to see the brand’s clothes and that I work with their muses. And he tells me regarding Charlotte Gainsbourg and Béatrice Dalle whom I adore! We talk regarding the duration, five minutes, ten minutes, and he is very open on the budget. Then I mention Cannes, the only fun place to give birth to a film. He asks me to think regarding the script and I have a super vague idea, a shooting of witch movies that goes wrong, with Béatrice as director and Charlotte as actress.
To go to Cannes, did you have to go very quickly?
(Gaspar got it). Absolutely, we had to start two weeks later! I didn’t give him a script for Eternal Light, everything was improvised. It was a big mess and I didn’t stop filming for five days. Anthony came to the set and the mess made him laugh a lot. He really gave me the means to work well. A dream producer! At the arrival, Eternal Light lasts 52 minutes, in split-screen and more! We were selected for Cannes, and we had a great climb up the stairs, with Anthony, top models, Béatrice, Charlotte… Anthony must have found the result satisfactory; since he produced Abel Ferrara, an editing film with Jean-Luc Godard and Almodóvar. He will even produce feature films, like Cronenberg’s.
You’re the last of the Independent Mohicans. How did it go between you?
He was super generous, I didn’t get the usual thoughts from the producer asking for changes. I had total freedom, he was very proud of the result.
A year later, you collaborate once more with him…
He asks me if it would be fun to do a short on his new collection. So I made this seven-minute short, with Charlotte Rampling, a little film inspired by Sighs by Dario Argento.
Saint Laurent has already announced a new Vaccarello-Noé project.
I see him regularly, I attend his parades which are always so spectacular, and I am very happy that he is becoming more active in the cinema. Anthony is very cinephile, he gets closer to the cinema he loves, it’s quite consistent. I saw that I was mentioned in his list, I don’t know yet what my next project will be, but I will ask him to participate. We have to see each other in Cannes…
