Two explosions at a liquefied gas station left one dead and 57 injured in Romania on Saturday near Bucharest, Romanian authorities announced. Thirty-nine firefighters who were working on the site of this liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) station in Crevedia, north of the capital, following the first explosion, were injured when the second explosion took place. Among them are two police officers and two gendarmes, detailed Raed Arafat, head of the rescue department, who specifies that some of these wounded suffer from serious burns.

“We have transferred two firefighters and two civilians abroad (for treatment) and others will follow,” Arafat said in a statement. These wounded were taken to Italy and Belgium, according to the Romanian Defense Ministry.

About 20 fire engines responded to the scene of the fire.

Unknown causes

The reasons for these explosions were not yet known, but an investigation is underway. “We know that the station was not in service, and had no authorization to operate,” said Mr. Arafat.

More than twenty fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and the population was evacuated within a radius of 700 meters, the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said in a statement.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis deplored a “tragedy” on Facebook and has already called for an investigation.
