Gas Station Crisis in Conakry: Government Orders Closure, Clashes Ensue, and Gasoline Availability

The day after the explosion in the port of Conakry, on the night of Sunday to Monday, December 18, the Guinean government ordered the closure of all gas stations. Stations which were able to reopen on Wednesday to serve only diesel, causing discontent and clashes in several districts of the capital. This Saturday, gasoline was in turn available and served at the stations.

Lines of cars wait their turn. Tension has even risen in places in Conakry’s gas stations.

This young unemployed graduate has been a motorcycle taxi driver since the end of his university studies in 2020. After 9 hours of waiting, he bites his nails and waits on his motorcycle without really hoping to get a liter of gasoline. “ I came at 8 a.m. and I didn’t get it, I’m going to go home and come early tomorrow morning, or even try my luck again to see if I can get gas. Four days that I don’t work, I’m at home. I live with my family, my father, my mother, I assist the family, sometimes with expenses ».

User fatigue

Dozing in his vehicle, this motorist despairs and wonders. “ I’ve been here for 6 hours, I’m tired, disgusted, I don’t know what to do with this fuel rationing thing anymore. Look at this queue, where are we going with this? It’s really sad for my country, this crisis will not find a solution now. In all of this, who will manage this crisis? I am scared ».
