In the province of Liège, a smell of gas agitates the town of Seraing. In recent days, it has almost become unbreathable for some residents. Fortunately, there are no leaks. It is in fact the product that gives the smell of the gas that accidentally leaked out at a scrap dealer. The heavy rains of the past few days have brought the smell back.
Willy takes us to his cellar, where the concentration is the strongest: “For me, it smells of gas”, he said, sniffling. In the neighborhood, dozens of homes are subject to these odors rising from the sewers. “Frankly, we don’t know how to fit in houses”regrets a lady.
Me, I don’t have money to pay for a hotel
For another, “it smells like gas and it even hurts my head”. A resident also complains: “no way to sleep, it’s really very very very bad”.
Several residents have left their homes, some are staying with family. Others went straight to the hotel. “We have to go live there? Who’s going to pay for all that? I don’t have money to pay for a hotel”laments a local resident.
The smell of gas is from a metal recycling company. The contents of an old tank went down the drain, it contained tetrahydrothiophene, the product used to give town gas its particular smell. He is extremely focused and very tenacious.
This product must even be incinerated to be able to get rid of it.
“If you have a drop of product on your clothes, it will smell of gas all the time. It must be eliminated. This product must even be incinerated to be able to get rid of it”explains Rudi Rully, chief inspector, environmental section of the Seraing police.
The environmental police of the Walloon Region are on site. Several minutes were drawn up. The pollution would go back a month, it was reactivated by the heavy rains of recent days. “We managed to see that there was still a place where there was stagnating product. And so we now think we have identified the source which continues for certain streets and certain houses to make this smell really unbearable for the citizens”says the mayor of Seraing, Deborah Geradon.
A complete cleaning of the sewers is planned. If this is not enough, it may be necessary to dig out and replace the sections of pipe that have been in contact with the product.
