Gas, electricity, fuel oil and fuels: 300 euros saved per household, according to the government

This Tuesday morning, the government presented, at a press conference, the details of the measures adopted to reduce household energy bills, following the surge in energy prices.

It was Monday evening, around 11:00 p.m., that the government, meeting in a select committee, reached an agreement.

VAT on electricity, already reduced previously, will be extended until the end of September.

Gas will also be subject to a VAT reduced to 6% from April until the end of September.

For people who heat with oil, a reduction of 200 euros will apply to the bill. Same thing for those heated by propane gas.

Fuel at the pump, petrol and diesel, will be subject to a reduction in excise duty of 0.175 euro per litre. According to government calculations, this would represent a reduction of 10 euros on a full tank of 60 litres. A reverse ratchet system must intervene from a 1.7 euro / liter. An evaluation is scheduled for mid-June.

As for the extended social tariff, which benefits one in five households, it is extended until September 30. The total cost of the measures is estimated at 1.3 billion euros. This cost is largely financed by the additional tax revenue induced by the price increase, ie 1.08 billion euros. “We return more than the additional tax revenue collected”said Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

This effort is in addition to the 1.1 billion euros of support decided in February.
