Gas, bloating, diarrhea: more and more Belgians affected by lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is characterized by digestive disorders such as gas, cramps, diarrhea, or bloating. Drinking a glass of milk, or consuming cheese then becomes a real ordeal. In Belgium, this intolerance concerns between 10 and 20% of the population, most often adults. The numbers are on the rise. Today, specialists are more aware of the problem, which explains the increase in diagnosed cases, according to our colleagues from the Last Hour.

Lactose intolerance is often genetic, and affects 70% of the North African community, and 90% in Asia. According to American researchers, 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant.

To detect it, you need to discuss your symptoms with your doctor. Very often, the most obvious solution is to avoid consuming foods containing lactose, the sugar that causes gastric discomfort. However, intolerance is not to be confused with lactose allergy, which can cause respiratory or skin symptoms. It is therefore essential to report these types of symptoms to your doctor for an effective diagnosis.
