CINCINNATI (AP) — Catcher Gary Sánchez received another opportunity to jump start his career. The 30-year-old hit a minor league deal with the New York Mets following being released by the San Francisco Giants.
The Mets assigned Sánchez to the Triple-A Syracuse branch. He will receive a $1.5 million major league salary if he makes the 40-player roster.
Without a team during preseason, Sánchez signed a minor league contract with the Giants on April 1. The agreement had set a salary of 4 million if he were to be included in the roster of 40 players for the first team.
In Triple-A Sacramento, Sánchez hit .164 with no homers and eight RBIs in 55 plate appearances. On May 1, the receiver opted for an exit clause, being released the following day.
Sánchez was named to the All-Star Game twice during his seven seasons with the Yankees. His batting average was .299 with 20 home runs in 2016 and .278 with 33 home runs and 90 RBIs in 2017.
