Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Gary Oldman admitted that he was grateful to be able to play Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series. He admitted that this character saved him, who at that time had just become a single parent.
Oldman divorced Donya Fiorentino in 2001. He later gained custody of their children; Alfie, Gulliver and Charlie, as well as his continued son, William.
He admitted that it was difficult, especially regarding finances, to raise four children alone at that time.
“At the age of 42, I woke up divorced and I had custody of these children until, by itself,…” said Gary Oldman in one of the episodes of The Drew Barrymore Show, Thursday (14/12).
Oldman, as reported Entertainment Weeklyrevealed that he actually received lots of filming offers, but they were all done in various parts of the world and meant he had to leave his children behind.
“It was difficult because there was a shift in the industry where there was a lot of production [syuting]namely in Hungary, Budapest, Prague, Australia, you know, all those places,” he continued.
This then made Oldman “turn down a lot of work” in order to be with his children. Until one day, he admitted that he was lucky because he got an offer to play Harry Potter and Batman.
“Thank God for Harry Potter,” Oldman said. “I’m telling you, Batman and Harry Potter, they really saved me, because it meant I might do a little job that made the most money and then be able to go home with the kids.”
