Our plants have real strengths and there are ingenious gardening techniques to ensure they reproduce quickly. Marcelarium, our garden expert, shares his secrets with you to make your plants immortal.

Did you know that some trees are 80,000 years old? And yes, all plants are potentially immortal and there are ingenious gardening techniques to get there. Marcellusgardener and columnist in the show #vousêtesformidables reveals all his secrets to you.

Plants have a real advantage in reproducing easily and quickly. This is totipotence.

When we are in the fetal state, we have cells that are capable of differentiating to make each organ. One will make the liver, the other will make something else and as we grow up, we lose this ability. Plants keep this ability all their lives and it is called totipotency.

Totipotency is the capacity of the cells of the plant, even when adult, to return to the meristhematic state, that is to say, to return to the same place where the cells divide to recreate a tissue.

The cambium, also called the “inner bark”, is truly the place where the magic happens.

Totipotency will allow the plant to reproduce roots when it is cut to in turn form a second plant.

There are several examples of trees or even shrubs that have managed to multiply thanks to this ability. To speed up this process, Marcelarium offers us a rather effective gardening technique: layering.

To rejuvenate your plants, layering, this vegetative propagation technique will be perfect. Quick, easy and ingenious, it will allow you to create a real clone.

Thanks to several layers, certain plant structures multiply without pollination. Air layering is an effective technique for rejuvenating a plant.

According to our garden expert, this technique “causes a plant to multiply”. On the set of the show #vousêtesformidables, he creates a tutorial in just a few minutes.

To carry out layering in the best possible way, you need to have the right tools:

a grafting post or a sphagnum cutter (a type of vegetable moss) a small plastic pot or aluminum foil pruning shears

First step: prepare the stem

First, choose a branch. Take a location of approximately 10 cm and without leaves. With a grfollowing, make an incision 0.5 cm deep.

Second step: fitting the sleeve

Secondly, take the small pot or aluminum foil and place it around the branch. Cut out the pot or wrap the branch with aluminum foil. Add a little slightly damp moss to encourage root regrowth.

Third and final step: weaning the layer

Wait three weeks or even a month before taking a look. If the root network is insufficient, add a little water and close it. Otherwise, take pruning shears and remove your installation. Then transplant it into a sufficiently large pot in the ground.

You now know how to bring a plant back to life. Up to you !
