Many Quebecers rush to garden centers to buy something cultivate fruits and vegetables at home to limit the impact of inflation on their wallets.

“We feel the enthusiasm for everything edible since last year, but this year, it tends to increase,” says Pierre Potvin, co-owner of Frank Fleuriste, a family business that has been in Montreal for 73 years.
The popularity of outdoor plants and flowers continues to grow this year, but more and more fruits and vegetables will be appearing in gardens.
“Anything that is fruit, as many small shrubs as pear trees, plum trees or blueberries, well, let’s say that people tear them off,” observes Marie-Ève Montminy, who works at the Montminy Garden Center in La Pocatière.
The owner of Pépinière Di Sabatino et fils in Terrebonne also reports that a good part of his clientele turns to gardening to avoid going to the grocery store.
“Fruits are very popular this year,” drops Nino Sabatino, who also sells shrubs, plants and flowers.

Although saving money is an obvious motivation for growing vegetables, many quickly take pleasure in it.
“I would say that people first want to save, then they think that it is not too complicated and so they continue to cultivate”, notes Mme Montminy.
Parents even suggest that their children choose the plants they like and ensure their survival throughout the summer.
“It’s not uncommon to see children who take up gardening […] I often suggest starting with a good ground cherry plant. It’s quite simple to maintain,” she explains.
Initiatives like The Planting Box also offer parents an option to learn regarding gardening with toddlers. The Quebec company specializes in ready-to-plant and has been offering starter kits for a year.
“We really feel that it’s more than a fad right now,” says Marie-Christine Leblanc, co-founder of The Planting Box, which expects to sell several thousand boxes once more this year.

Choosing seedlings instead of seedlings can be a simple way to save money.
