Gantz reveals the reasons for the decision to recruit the Haredim into the Israeli army

Israel – The Minister in the Israeli War Cabinet, Benny Gantz, said yesterday, Thursday, that the temporary order issued by the court to freeze support for religious school students is due to the country’s need for soldiers in difficult times of war.

“The issue is not the Supreme Court or the prosecutor who is faithfully doing her job — but our need for soldiers in difficult times of war, and the need of our society for everyone to share in the duty of serving the state,” Gantz said.

Gantz added: “Today, the Supreme Court ruled the obvious. It is time for the government to do the obvious. It is time to act.”

Earlier today, Israeli Supreme Court Justices Uzi Fogelman, Yitzhak Amit, and Noam Solberg issued a temporary injunction freezing support for yeshiva students who must join the draft as of April 1.

The Chief Rabbi of Israel, Yitzhak Yosef, had said earlier: “If Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government forces us to conscript, we will all leave the country.”

It is noteworthy that regarding 66 thousand young men from the “Haredi” community obtained an exemption from military service during the past year, which is a record number, especially amid the state of war that Israel is experiencing, and the multiple fronts it is dealing with.

Since 2017, successive Israeli governments have failed to reach a consensus law requiring the recruitment of religious Jews (Haredim) following the Supreme Court annulled the law enacted in 2015 exempting them from military service and justifying this by saying that the exemption violates the “principle of equality.”
