Since its launch in the video game, the streaming giant had not made an impression. But this second episode of “Oxenfree” is essential.
How not to think of the “Zeitgeist”? The German expression literally translates to “spirit of the times”. Proponents of this notion believe that each era carries what might be considered an intellectual atmosphere. A way of explaining why contemporary works are so similar or why comparable inventions are imagined at the same time.
It’s hard not to see a connection between the video game “Oxenfree I”, released in 2016, and season one of the series “Stranger Things”, published a few months later. As in the series produced by Netflix, we followed a group of teenagers very quickly confronted with paranormal phenomena.
Analog aesthetics
The two works have in particular in common a strong inspiration from genre films reserved for an adolescent audience in the 80s and 90s. The two plunged headlong into a very analog aesthetic, giving pride of place to VHS and transistors. But “Oxenfree” is much finer and more intriguing than the series.
Netflix, by deciding to get into the video game, offered Night School Studio in September 2021 to allow its subscribers to try the title at no additional cost on mobile devices.
The ghost story of “Oxenfree” was not just a tribute to the youth of its creators, it was a game with incredibly embodied characters thanks to a very natural real-time dialogue system. Rare thing in the video game, “Oxenfree” makes it possible to cut the word, lets its characters hesitate. We talk like in real life. Impossible not to believe in the characters and the adventure they live on screen.
The talent of the developers has not only caught the eye of players around the world since Netflix, by deciding to get into the video game, offered Night School Studio in September 2021 to allow its subscribers to try the title at no additional cost on mobile devices.

Unmissable pearl
It is therefore under the Netflix flag that this second episode is releasing. The Pacific Northwest is definitely full of surprises. Even better paced, the game always asks to triturate the frequencies of its radio to reveal different interdimensional portals or communicate with disappeared entities. The game is not a revolution and reuses the same tricks as the first: dialogues always just as right and captivating, painted decorations, and a camera far removed from the action leaving plenty of room for imagination. Without forgetting a electronic and noisy soundtrack, signed scntfcwhich it is impossible not to listen to in a loop.
Like “Oxenfree I”, its sequel is an unmissable pearl, very accessible. Especially since it is available on a very wide range of machines. No excuse to miss it.
