Game Porting Toolkit won’t end Apple’s gaming problem, say developers

After the announcement of the Game Porting Toolkit, journalist Peter Cohen, from the iMore portal, polled game developers for Mac, and the consensus was that it will be necessary to see how long the solution will last. This is because, according to professionals, Apple has already made several attempts to support the gaming industry in the operating system, but this area is far from being a priority.

The toolkit in question, presented last month during WWDC, is a set of tools that might be used to bring games from Microsoft’s system or consoles to devices that run Apple’s software.

The feature is aimed at developers but has been rated as too restricted, starting with access to Xcode and other technical skills restricted to some. The solution seems, following all, more like a starting point than an arrival point, since porting a game to the Mac system is no longer as difficult as years ago, and there are tools like Wine (from which Game Porting Toolkit departed) and Proton.

Developers complain that they cannot see Apple’s system as profitable, while there are arguments that users of the system do not buy games as often as Windows, which also ends up causing games to come out with a certain delay. For professionals, it would take Apple with continued and constant support for their system to be seen in the same light as others.

Apple had promising gaming technologies that didn’t take off, like QuickDraw 3D RAVE and Game Sprockets. Both were abandoned before OS X. Apple preferred OpenGL but now adopts Metal for the Game Porting Toolkit. In contrast, according to analyst Cohen, Microsoft understands that DirectX and games play a central role in how people interact with Windows.
