On Saturday, Haapsalu’s city government handed out titles of honorary citizens of the city, awards and letters of thanks to those who contributed to the development of the city.

The mayor of Haapsalu, Urmas Sukles, said that while walking around Haapsalu, he noticed that the houses in the city are becoming more beautiful. „But the people who live in these houses and the people who live in our city and the basis of our city and republic are the people,†said Sukles. He added that some people stand out with their achievements, good work and dedication. „And today we have gathered here to thank these extraordinary people,†said the mayor.

First, honorary citizen titles were awarded to composer and choir director Sirje Kaasik, fencing coach Peeter Nelis and Haapsalu Early Music Festival organizer Toomas Siitani.

When Nelis accepted the title of honorary citizen today, she first addressed her husband, but also everyone she has worked with, from colleagues to parents. „Times are not easy, they are exciting. May we continue to have wisdom, good decisions and fortitude to follow through,†Nelis said.

The town’s 250-euro appreciation award, along with an artwork by Haapsalu artist Liisa Äkke, went to the best people in the fields of youth, education, sports and culture. In addition, letters of appreciation from the Haapsalu city government were given along with brooches or cufflinks made by Epp Maria Kokamäe.

At the thanksgiving event, musical interludes were offered by accordionist Henri Zibo from Haapsalu, who ended his performance with pieces loved by all Estonians by Gustav Ernesaksa’s “My father’s love is my love” and Arvo Pärd’s “Ukuaru waltz”.

At 6 p.m., a folk party began in a small fortress, where, despite the rain, the female guardians of the home offered soup and those who wished might spin their legs to the accompaniment of a video disco.
