If, while eating a piece of galette des rois, one of your guests swallows the bean, there is indeed a risk of misdirection of this plastic or earthenware object. How to react to such a situation?

False airway accidents occur mainly in children under 4 years old. They are mainly due to the ingestion of foreign bodies. Peanuts, pistachios, coins, toy parts, marbles, candy, pieces of meat or in this case, bean.

This false route results from the passage of food or a small object through the respiratory tract (throat, trachea, bronchi) rather than through the digestive tract (esophagus). In addition to respiratory problems, the presence of foreign bodies in the trachea or bronchi creates a risk of infection.

To limit accidents linked to a wrong turn with a bean in the galette des Rois, caution remains essential. To avoid accidental ingestion, take care not to give any portion that may contain it to a young child. As an adult, chew slowly to reduce the risk of broken teeth, dentures or brackets.

How to react in the event of an accident?

If the victim coughs, do not do anything, and let them catch their breath. If it is a child, do not hang it by its feet. Don’t put your fingers in his mouth. These maneuvers are dangerous. Finally, take the victim, in a sitting or standing position, to the emergency room for medical advice.

If the victim cannot cough, speak or breathe, call the emergency services at 15 or 112 or the fire brigade at 18. Try the ‘slaps on the back’ method, the aim of which is to provoke a movement of cough, to unblock and expel the foreign body which is obstructing the airways. To do this, stand to the side and slightly behind the victim, support their chest with one hand and lean them forward enough so that the cleared obstacle exits the mouth rather than returning to the airway. Give him 5 vigorous slaps on the back, between the two shoulder blades with the flat of the other hand open.

If this fails, you will have to immediately perform the second maneuver known as the “Heimlich maneuver”, which consists of abdominal compression:

Stand behind the victim and place your arms around their upper abdomen. Lean the victim forward. Place one of your closed fists between the navel and the lower end of the sternum. Hold your fist in place using your other hand. Drive your fist hard towards you and upwards. Repeat this gesture a maximum of 5 times.

For an infant, the ‘Mofenson maneuver’ is more suitable. Place the child astride your thigh, with their head above their knee. Strike violently between the two shoulder blades with the flat of your hand.
