Samsung Aims for Thinner Foldables with S Pen Redesign
Samsung is reportedly switching gears on how S Pen functionality will be integrated into their upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, aiming for a thinner design. This follows their initial experiment with a thinner “Special Edition” Fold, which unfortunately dropped S Pen support due to the added thickness required for the technology. According to a report from ETNews, Samsung plans to ditch its current electromagnetic resonance (EMR) digitizer in favor of active electrostatic (AES) technology. Both technologies use electricity for precise stylus input, but EMR relies on a layer within the display assembly, adding bulk. AES, on the other hand, places the electrical component within the stylus itself – a method already employed by Apple’s iPad and Apple Pencil. This shift does mean the S Pen will now require charging, unlike Samsung’s previous, battery-free design. However, since the stylus isn’t built directly into the Fold, there’s no need to figure out onboard charging. This change also allows for the potential use of a titanium backplate behind the display, replacing the carbon fiber used to avoid interference with the EMR digitizer. The S Pen redesign is expected to debut with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in 2025. Hopefully, Samsung finds a more elegant charging solution than the infamous jutting-out-of-the-USB-C-port method used by Apple in the past. “Hopefully it won’t charge by jutting out of the USB-C port,” jokingly commentedMore on Samsung:

## Archyde Interviews: Samsung’s Foldable Future
**Interviewer:** Welcome back to Archyde Insights.Today we’re diving into the exciting world of foldable phones and have a very special Alex Reed joining us. [Alex Reed Name], welcome to the show!
**Alex Reed:** thanks for having me.
**Interviewer:** Let’s jump right in. Rumors are swirling about the next generation Galaxy Z Fold, specifically regarding Samsung’s plans for S Pen integration. Can you shed some light on what we might expect to see in the upcoming Z Fold 7?
**Alex Reed:** Absolutely. It truly seems Samsung is taking a new approach with the S Pen for the Z Fold 7. They’re aiming for a significantly thinner design this time around.
**Interviewer:** Intriguing! We certainly know that the previous “Special Edition” Fold, though thinner, regrettably, dropped S Pen support as of space constraints. So, how does Samsung plan to overcome this challenge?
**Alex Reed:** The key lies in a shift in technology. samsung is reportedly moving from electromagnetic resonance (EMR) digitizer to active electrostatic (AES) technology for stylus input.
**Interviewer:** Can you explain the difference for our viewers?
**Alex Reed:** Both technologies rely on electricity for precise stylus input, but EMR utilizes a layer within the display assembly, which adds thickness. AES, on the other hand, incorporates the electrical component within the stylus itself.this is the same technology Apple uses for its iPad and Apple Pencil.
**Interviewer:** Fascinating! so, this switch to AES allows for a thinner overall design, but does it come with any drawbacks?
**Alex Reed:** one notable change is that the S Pen will require charging with AES, unlike Samsung’s previous battery-free design.
**Interviewer:** that’s a meaningful shift for users accustomed to the passive S Pen. Do we know anything about battery life or charging methods for the new stylus?
**Alex Reed:** Details are still scarce, but it’s likely Samsung will aim for convenient charging solutions, potentially through inductive charging within the phone itself.
**Interviewer:** Sounds promising. What are the potential implications of this S Pen redesign for the overall user experiance with the Z Fold 7?
**Alex Reed:** It’s a game-changer. the thinner design could make the Fold even more portable and appealing.
AES opens doors for enhanced stylus performance and responsiveness.
**Interviewer:** Marvelous. Thank you so much for sharing your insights, [Alex Reed Name]. We’re eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and all the exciting new features it will bring.
**Alex Reed:** My pleasure. It’s an exciting time for foldable technology!
