Galaxy S23 Ultra vs Motorola Edge 30 Ultra: Photo Comparison

2023-04-19 21:15:00

We compare the two Ultra cell phones, current top of the line of each brand. Both have a 200MP main sensor, are similarities that make us question, which is better? To analyze the quality of the cameras, we performed some tests in different lighting conditions and situations. We started with the main camera on both phones, capturing photos in both well-lit and low-light environments. We also tested the ultrawide cameras and the front-facing selfie cameras. Want to see the result, follow until the end of the video.

Camera specs

Before we start comparing images, let’s take a look at the camera specs for each of these phones. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a main camera of 200 MP, a second camera of 10 MP with 10x optical zoom, a third camera of 10 MP with 3x optical zoom, a fourth camera of 12 MP (ultrawide) and a front camera of 12 MP. Meanwhile, Motorola Edge 30 Ultra has a 200MP main camera, a 50MP second camera (ultrawide), a 12MP third camera with 2x optical zoom and a 60MP front camera.

camera comparison

main camera

I start by bringing the main camera, in the first photo it is already a difficulty, taking a picture of a window, the HDR needs to treat the internal area where there is little light and not burst the external area, the exposure needs to be softened so that the colors and luminosity do not burst. We can notice in the internal area a greater exposure of the Edge 30 Ultra in the window area, but there is also a little noise.

Photo two is a larger simulation of photo 1, taken inside studio 2 here at Oficina da Net. As in photo 1, you can see the warmer green colors in the Samsung photo. Note that in the blind there is a higher incidence of noise in the Samsung photo, which this time had a little more exposure.

Photo 3 continues with the difficulty, after all these cameras need to extract the maximum, right? I stood in front of the window, just like the first two Samsung had a warmer tone and lit up the person more. In the internal areas there is noise in both photos.

Now a photo outside, on a cloudy day, maintaining the same characteristic of the previous photos, with greater saturation in the colors of the Samsung photos. There is also more lighting in the shaded areas of the trees.

Photo 4

The photo is now very interesting, the photo has several colors, such as the red of the shirt, the blue of the pool, the green of the grass and the woody tone of the floor, see that the sharpness of the two photos is very good.

night photos

Let’s take a look now at night photos, starting with this photo with the wet floor. As in the others, the warmer tone is present again in the Samsung photo, Motorola again left some areas with more shadows, and the sky was completely dark, there were clouds during the day, so it is not possible to see stars. Samsung has an incidence of light in the part near the gutter, where there is light exposure. The sharpness of both photos is great.

Now another difficult photo for the cameras to handle, me sitting against the light. The focus is set to me, we can notice again the same feature as before. There is also, in the Motorola photo, a burst of light from the lamp against the wall.

night photo 2

Now an internal photo that I usually take, this piece of furniture is illuminated from the left side, look at the brown wall, in the Samsung photo there is much more noise than in the Motorola photo. The objects are in good sharpness, there is little difference in the two pictures.

Now yes, I placed the LG speaker outside, activated its light, focused the photo to the light cone and captured it. Motorola has done a masterful job in capturing this. The fabric of the box is visible, the light was reduced to be able to see it, the colors became much more real, the background lit up, everything just right. Samsung, as much as I tried to take several photos, the best result was this one, with the dark background, the darkest box and the burst bulb.

Another indoor photo I like to take is the lighting of the lamp on the wall, look at the great work of the two cameras, nothing blown out, sharpness in the right spot and little noise. Photo worthy of a top-of-the-line device.

Another outdoor night photo, taking advantage of the water to make a photo with reflection, we can see the sky in the Samsung photo, when Motorola hides it, by maintaining a darker shadow profile.

A traditional photo of those who follow me here on the channel is of Sesi in front of my house, this photo taken with night mode on both devices. The sky is again evidenced in the Samsung photo, both have good sharpness. The car is much brighter in the Samsung photo.

To end the night session, we have a photo inside the studio, with some colors. The focal point was on the blueprint, Motorola blurred the keyboard more than Samsung. Colors following the same pattern of more saturation and more warmth in the Samsung photo.

Selfies

Sit down, the selfies are coming now. The first one against the window, well, this one has a lot of difference as you can see there. Samsung did a better job, Motorola couldn’t handle the HDR in this photo.

Selfie 1
Selfie 1

Now in the external area, on the balcony of the building, there is light on the left side of the photo, and again the background is lighter in the Motorola photo. See that Samsung knows how to handle the dynamic range better in selfies. The entire Motorola photo is more exposed.

Selfie 2
Selfie 2

The selfie is now in motion, what I want to show is the window, where Buddy is looking out. See the difference in the two photos. My face is brighter in the Motorola photo, but the background.

Selfie 3
Selfie 3

Now a selfie inside the studio, with light from the side of my face, Motorola left my face pale, while Samsung did a great job, with colors much closer to reality.

Conclusion

I focused the test on the main camera, as the idea here was to show that Samsung’s 200MP sensor HP1 on Edge 30 Ultra and HP3 on S23 Ultra do a very good job. Samsung, in my opinion, is a champion in photos, but the work that Motorola has done on the Edge 30 Ultra is hats off, showing that it is on the right track. There are some adjustments still to be made, Motorola has a 60MP sensor for selfies, but Samsung won with its 12MP sensor.

Otherwise, the S23 Ultra has more options with a 10x optical zoom, ultrawide photos are balanced as well as the main sensor.

Tell me in the comments, what did you think of the photos taken? Who do you think won the camera battle? Comment there.
