This is the image that made a lot of noise at the British Grand Prix: the ultra spectacular and potentially dramatic exit from the road of Guanyu Zhou, from the first hectometres of travel. Fortunately, and almost miraculously, the Chinese escaped unscathed and the race might therefore be continued. To the comments of the Grand-Prix and therefore necessarily at the forefront of the accident, Gaetan Vigneron returned to these shock images at the microphone of Charlie the Wasseige.
“We immediately understood that it was really very serious because there was a red flag directlybegan our commentator. That is to say that the race direction understood very quickly that there was a very big incident. There were two pilots targeted, Alex Albon et Guanyu Zhou. There were no pictures, it’s a new F1 policy since the death of Ayrton Senna. We remember that we saw him lying on the track, we gave him cardiac massages, there were traces of blood. It’s over, since that day, we only show the images when we are 100% sure of the condition of the pilots involved.
Is seeing the Chinese safe and sound a miracle? “Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that it might obviously have ended much worse, you have to keep in mind that motorsport is – and will remain – a dangerous sport and that one day the balance will tip in the wrong direction. But the progress is enormous and it’s a living matter, which never stops. The FIA is already busy looking into all the details of the accident to try to improve things.”
